Sodium Cyanide cylinders missing after truck accident; Dangers of poisonous chemical spilled in Kiambu

It is now emerging that cylinders of poisonous sodium cyanide are missing from a lorry which overturned in Rironi, Kiambu County.

According to Limuru Deputy County Commissioner Charles Mukele says eight (8) out of the 24 containers have been retrieved.

“Wale walibeba tafadhali surrender them wherever they are. Tunaambiwa hiyo kitu ni sumu sana. Mtungi mmoja unaweza ua watu wengi sana. Tumezungumza na walimu wakuu eneo hili, ili mwanafunzi yeyote ameona mtungi wa green kwao amwambie mwalimu na mwalimu atawaambia sisi, alafu twende tuchukue. Hakuna mtu ambaye tutamdhulumu,” Mukele said.

The truck overturned, causing a spillage of the highly toxic substance in the Kambembe area of Rironi.

Dangers of Sodium Cyanide

  1. Toxicity and Poisoning: Sodium cyanide is extremely toxic. Ingestion or inhalation of even small amounts can be fatal. Exposure can cause immediate symptoms such as headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting. Severe exposure can lead to loss of consciousness and convulsions within minutes. Prolonged or repeated exposure to lower levels can result in long-term health issues including neurological damage, thyroid dysfunction, and cardiovascular problems.
  2. . Environmental Hazards: Sodium cyanide poses a significant threat to aquatic life. Accidental release into waterways can cause extensive fish kills and long-term damage to aquatic ecosystems. Although sodium cyanide can degrade over time, its initial impact is often devastating.

Protective Measures

Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and eye protection is essential when handling sodium cyanide to prevent direct exposure.

Adequate ventilation and spill containment systems are crucial in environments where sodium cyanide is handled/present.

Thorough training on its hazards and emergency response procedures is mandatory for anyone who may need to handle sodium cyanide. Immediate access to antidotes is vital in case of any form of poisoning.

The Ministry of Health advises the public to avoid the site of the incident and to cooperate with our emergency and disaster response teams as they work to contain the situation.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to ensuring public safety and managing the risks associated with hazardous substances,” the Ministry says. “Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
