Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has given former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng a last chance to continue with her healing journey at a rehabilitation centre.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday January 16, Sonko noted that he was committed to helping Conjestina despite attempts by some people to water down his efforts.

“Even though our chances in conjestina’s healing journey were watered down, I’m a person who doesn’t give up in life. It is for this reason that we have given Conjestina the third and last chance again on her case.

“I just want to let the public know that she was readmitted at the Mombasa women rehabilitation centre where she will start her treatment afresh under the care of a group of specialists, including councillors, consultants and physiatrists,” Sonko explained in a statement.

At the same time, the former Nairobi governor appreciated the management of Mombasa Women’s Hospital for accepting Conjestina back to the facility.

This is after reports circulated on social media that Conjestina had relapsed after returning to her rural home in Yala.

Sonko’s remarks emerged after allegations circulated online that he had abandoned Conjestina, who is Kenya’s boxing legend.

Initially, the former Nairobi governor issued a clarification after a video featuring phone conversations with Conjestina’s family went viral showing how she left Sonko’s camp.

“I have seen a post by my good friend Carol Radul on Conjee, which attracted both positive and negative reactions from the public. Others were criticising and accusing me of playing PR and vipindiree. I hereby wish to respond with facts as hereunder: Kenyans, I did my best to help Conjee, but her family watered down my efforts,” Sonko clarified.

“I needed to go to court and a warrant of arrest could have been issued against me if I failed. Conjestina was upset that I did not get her a plane ticket and put her on the bus. My team also travelled with SGR,” Sonko explained.

He also rejected the family’s decision to recall Conjestina from his care, insisting that her family was not well equipped to take care of her rehabilitation needs.

Conjestina’s problems started more than 10 years ago in 2011 when she faced both mental health and financial challenges.

As a result, her career in boxing came to a sudden end as a result of her mental illness.

However in September 2022, the boxing champion was admitted to Mombasa Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini.
