Sonko rescues former journalist Kimani Mbugua again

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has once again come to the aid of ex-TV journalist Kimani Mbugua, following reports that he had relapsed and returned to the streets.

Sonko dispatched a team to locate Mbugua, who was found in Makongeni estate, Thika, Kiambu County.

“He was brought to our headquarters, where we are currently overseeing his well-being after providing him with new clothing and allowing him to take a refreshing shower,” Sonko stated.

Mbugua has battled mental health and addiction issues in recent years. Sonko, known for his philanthropy, has taken a personal interest in his rehabilitation.

“I engaged him in an extensive counselling session and decided to offer him a second chance,” Sonko revealed.

While there were initial plans to fly Mbugua to Mombasa, his condition has necessitated a change in plans. Instead, he will be driven to the Mombasa Women’s Rehabilitation Centre, where he will receive care and support.

“I have chosen not to involve Kimani’s family at this stage, but I will ensure that he remains at the rehabilitation centre,” Sonko emphasized.

Sonko cited the success story of former NTV journalist Eunice Omollo, who was previously admitted to Mathari Mental Hospital alongside Mbugua. Omollo was later transferred to the Mombasa Women’s Rehabilitation Centre and has since made a full recovery.

“She is now employed at K24 TV and has recently produced two documentaries—one focusing on tuberculosis and the other on World Bipolar Day. This is a positive development, as she has successfully returned to her profession,” Sonko noted.

However, Sonko also pointed out the risks of relapse, citing the case of Nabala Nasibo, who resumed heavy drinking after leaving rehabilitation.

“Therefore, I am committed to ensuring that Kimani receives the necessary care and support for his full recovery,” Sonko affirmed.

If Mbugua makes a successful recovery, Sonko plans to offer him employment at the rehabilitation centre, following the example of former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng, who now provides counselling services at the facility.

Mbugua’s struggles with mental health and addiction have been widely publicized, sparking conversations about the need for better mental health support systems in Kenya. Sonko’s latest intervention offers a glimmer of hope for the journalist’s future.
