Sossion: Why over 50% of 2023 KCSE candidates failed to acquire C+

“Invest in teachers for every school; not just national schools but all schools without categorization,” this is according to former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion.

According to Sossion, the poor performance in the 2023 KCPE examinations was down to a “lack of motivated teachers”.

In the results announced on Monday, January 8, only 201,133 students scored a mean grade of C+ and above out of the total 899,453 candidates.

Sossion says that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should invest in employing qualified teachers in schools countrywide without any discrimination or inequity.

“A school is a school and that school must have a qualified teacher in the classroom all the time,” Sossion said in an interview with Citizen TV.

He added: “If you check the schools that have posted A’s, they have gone the extra mile to hire BOM teachers. Tenwek High School; out of the 100 teachers in the staffroom, 50 teachers are employed by the BoM.”

He also called for the government to come up with a mechanism of motivating teachers whose students perform well in national exams.

“I would expect that TSC lays out a plan so that teachers who have done well are motivated. Quality report and review of every school’s performance.”
