Shortly after making history by winning the Women’s World Cup final beating England 1-0 to carry the trophy, Spain’s national team captain Olga Carmona whose goal won the cup for the country received the devastating news of the death of her father.
According to media reports, the 23-year-old father died on Friday after battling a long illness.
“And without knowing it, I had my Star before the game started. I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique. I know that you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. rest in peace Dad” she wrote, adding a picture of her kissing her winner’s medal along with the message.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the death of Olga Carmona’s father just hours after she scored the winning goal in the Women’s World Cup final.
“We deeply regret that we must announce the death of Olga Carmona’s father,” the RFEF wrote in a short statement published on social media.
Spanish media have revealed that her family and friends decided not to tell her so she could focus on the final, with her mother and brothers arriving in Australia on Saturday to support her.
Her club parent Real Madrid also expressed “condolences and affection for Olga, her relatives and all her loved ones”.
