Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales steps down over kissing scandal

Luis Rubiales has tendered his resignation from the role of president of the Spanish football federation.

This brings an end to weeks of intense criticism stemming from his controversial kiss with Jennifer Hermoso, the Women’s World Cup champion.

Confirming this the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) verified that Luis Rubiales had also officially submitted his resignation as the vice president of UEFA.

Rubiales pledged to vindicate his reputation, addressing what he characterized as “unwarranted persecution.”

“I have faith in the truth and I will do everything when it’s in my hands so that it prevails,” he wrote.

“My daughters, my family and the people who love me have suffered the effects of excessive persecution,

“as well as many falsehoods, but it’s also true that in the street, every day more, the truth is being imposed.”

Rubiales faced scrutiny for his actions during the Women’s World Cup final, where he kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain’s 1-0 victory over England.

Furthermore, observers noted him making a crotch-grabbing gesture during his post-match celebrations.

These actions drew widespread criticism from various quarters.

Rubiales assumed the presidency of the RFEF in 2018, and a series of controversies marked his tenure in office.

Only a few months into his role, he dismissed Spain coach Julen Lopetegui just before the World Cup.

Moreover, his uncle, the former director of his office, alleged that Rubiales had misappropriated RFEF funds for organizing specific events.

In April 2022, El Confidencial published the “Supercopa Files,” a compilation of leaked documents and audio recordings.

These materials contained conversations from 2019 involving Rubiales and Gerard Pique.

In October 2022, El Confidencial released a WhatsApp chat where Rubiales derogated multiple Spanish football teams.
