Spanish Football Federation issues a statement on the controversial kiss between its president and one of the players

The Spanish Football Federation has issued a statement in regard to the controversial kiss between its president Luis Rubiales and one of the national team players Jenni Hermoso during the world cup celebration after Spain won 3-1 beating England.

The statement which was released on behalf of Hermosa follows backlash from the internet, and it indicated that the kiss was harmless and it was a sign of immense joy.

This was a totally spontaneous and mutual gesture due to the immense joy that winning the World Cup gave us,” the statement says.

“The President and I have a great relationship, his behaviour with everyone has been excellent and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude.

“We have won a World Cup and we are not going to lose sight of what is important.”

The federation’s president Luis has fallen under harsh criticism over the kiss.

Following Spain’s victory, the players made their way onto the podium to receive their first-place medal from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Rubiales flanked FIFA president Gianni Infantino on the podium to congratulate the ladies and when Jenni Hermoso came past, he hugged the 33-year-old and lifted her up, conversed briefly, kissed her on the lips and lightly hit her on the back as she walked off the podium.

The incident was covered by the full glare of the camera, and afterwards, the player said on an Instagram live stream in the dressing room said that she did not enjoy it.
