A photojournalist from the Nation Media Group, Chris Omollo, is recovering in hospital after allegedly being assaulted by a police officer at Dandora Stadium in Nairobi on April 27, 2025.
The incident occurred as Omollo was waiting to gain access to cover the Kenya Premier League match between Gor Mahia and Mara Sugar.
According to colleagues, the attack was unprovoked, with Omollo reportedly struck on the back of the head, causing him to collapse and require immediate medical attention.
The assault has drawn widespread condemnation from the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK), which has issued a formal letter to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) demanding swift and decisive action.
SJAK Secretary-General Moses Wakhisi described the incident as a grave violation of press freedom and journalist safety, emphasizing that such aggression cannot be tolerated. “The safety of our members must be guaranteed at all times, particularly in the course of their professional duties.
The actions of the police officer involved in this assault are unacceptable and cannot go unpunished,” Wakhisi stated12.
SJAK has threatened to boycott all FKF-related activities unless concrete measures are taken to address the issue and prevent future occurrences.
The association also called for a review and reinforcement of security protocols for journalists covering football matches in Kenya.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of journalists at sporting events in the country. As Omollo continues his recovery, stakeholders await FKF’s response and any potential actions from relevant authorities to ensure a safer working environment for the press.
