Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has reassured the Kenyan public and sports fraternity that the Talanta Stadium, a state-of-the-art sports facility, will be completed by December 2025. This announcement follows the CS’s inspection visit to the stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Project Progress and Timeline
During the tour, CS Mvurya expressed satisfaction with the stadium’s progress, confirming that the construction remains on schedule.
“I am pleased to report that the project is progressing well and is on track for completion by December 2025, in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” said Mvurya.
The Talanta Stadium, with a 60,000-seat capacity, is designed to host both rugby and football matches, making it the first of its kind in the East African region. The facility will serve as Kenya’s primary venue for the 2027 AFCON, alongside three other key stadiums Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret,Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
Update on Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums
CS Mvurya also provided updates on the readiness of Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, which are set to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August 2025.
Nyayo Stadium:The stadium has already been approved for hosting the tournament, with only minor improvements needed for full readiness. Kasarani Stadium on the other hand the CS noted significant progress at Kasarani, stating:
“They have already fixed the lights. The field has regenerated very well, including the grass and other pending works. Great progress has been made, and I’m optimistic about the venue’s readiness.”
Further work on Kasarani includes finalizing the lighting system and minor adjustments to ensure the facility is in mint condition.
Kenya’s AFCON and CHAN Hosting Preparations
Kenya, together with Uganda and Tanzania, secured the bid to host both the 2024 CHAN and the 2027 AFCON. In response, the government has undertaken extensive efforts to construct and rehabilitate sports facilities to meet international standards for the tournaments.
Mvurya emphasized the importance of these projects in positioning Kenya as a leading host for global sports events and creating lasting infrastructure to boost sports development in the region.
