The Ministry of Sports has submitted its Supplementary Budget Estimates to the Parliamentary Committee on Sports & Culture, outlining key allocations aimed at strengthening Kenya’s sports sector.
The discussions, led by Cabinet Secretary (CS) Hon. Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretary (PS) for Sports Eng. Peter Tum, and PS for the State Department of Youth, Ismail Maalim, focused on sports infrastructure, anti-doping measures, and grassroots talent development.
Government’s Commitment to Sports Growth
CS Mvurya thanked Parliament and Committee Chair Hon. Dan Wanyama for their support, emphasizing that the proposed budget would drive transformative change in Kenya’s sports ecosystem.
“With Kenya set to co-host CHAN 2024 and actively preparing for AFCON 2027, investing in world-class sports infrastructure is a necessity, not an option,” Mvurya stated.
Key Focus Areas of the Budget Proposal
1. Sports Infrastructure Development
- Upgrading key stadiums to position Kenya as a top host nation for international tournaments.
- Enhancing facilities to meet global standards ahead of major sporting events such as CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027.
2. Anti-Doping Measures
- Strengthening Kenya’s commitment to integrity in sports through strict anti-doping regulations.
- Protecting athletes’ credibility and safeguarding Kenya’s global reputation.
3. Grassroots Talent Development
- Providing structured training, mentorship, and competitive opportunities for young athletes.
- Ensuring the long-term sustainability of Kenya’s dominance in athletics and other sports.
PS Tum reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to governance and integrity, stressing the importance of well-supported athletes in maintaining Kenya’s sporting legacy.
“To sustain Kenya’s dominance in sports, we must invest in the next generation,” he noted, underlining the need for structured talent pathways.
