In Summary

  • A bitter and controversial quarter-final defeat at the hands of Uruguay, or at least the hands of Luis Suarez, at the 2010 South Africa World Cup remains one of Ghana's most painful sporting moments.

  • In that match, Suarez was red-carded in the dying seconds of extra-time after making a goal-saving clearance with his hand, with the scores level at 1-1. Unfortunately for Ghana, Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting spot-kick and Uruguay went on to win on penalties.

  • Suarez's actions literally denied Ghana a historic moment as the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Suarez's actions literally denied Ghana a historic moment as the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Ahead of their first meeting since the 2010 World Cup, Suarez - who was Uruguay's designated player to face the media ahead of the game on Friday, December 2 - said he was not sorry at all.

“I didn’t say sorry because I did the handball but Ghana’s player missed the penalty, not me,” the 35-year-old answered a Ghanaian journalist who had told him that he is referred to as “the devil himself” in the country, questioning why Suarez had never apologised for his actions..

“Maybe I would apologise if I tackled and injured a player but in this situation, I took the red card, the referee gave a penalty and it’s not my fault because I didn’t miss the penalty.

“You saw that the player who missed the penalty said he’d do the same. It’s not my responsibility to take the penalty," Suarez added.

Payback will almost certainly be on the minds of many supporters when the Black Stars take on Uruguay in their final Group H clash, a match that will help determine who advances to the World Cup knockout stage.

Uruguay have taken just one point from their first two matches and must beat Ghana to have any chance of reaching the last-16, while Ghana can only be certain of qualification with victory themselves.
