Renowned TV journalist Stephen Letoo has bowed to mounting pressure and resigned from his position as chairman of the Men’s Conference, effective immediately.
Letoo’s decision to step down comes amidst social media criticism, with many accusing him of hypocrisy for advocating polygamy while opting for a monogamous marriage during his recent public wedding at the William ole Ntimama stadium on April 20.
The esteemed political reporter faced increasing scrutiny online, prompting calls from Men’s Conference supporters for him to vacate his role and pass the baton to a successor capable of steering the group forward.
Cutting short his holiday in Zanzibar, Letoo returned to Kenya to address the issues surrounding his tenure at the Men’s Conference. In a statement, he expressed his resignation, citing extensive reflection and consultations with associates both in Kenya and abroad.
“After much consideration, I have decided to step down as chairman of the Men’s Conference, tendering my resignation to the Nairobi office with immediate effect,” Letoo announced.
He assured members that he would remain available for guidance and consultation, allowing them to select his replacement.
National Secretary-General Festus Rotich, known as Pinamba, and Patron Brian Mwendwa acknowledged receipt of Letoo’s resignation letter and disclosed plans to advertise the vacant chairperson position in newspapers.
Reflecting on the challenges ahead, Letoo acknowledged the formidable legacy of his predecessor, the late Mzee Jackson Kibor, and recognized the daunting task of managing men’s affairs.
Stephen Letoo expressed gratitude for the cooperation he received during his one-and-a-half-year tenure, emphasizing the importance of the incoming chairman’s advocacy for the rights of men and boys, regardless of marital status.
Letoo highlighted achievements such as initiatives promoting men’s mental health and safety campaigns, urging his successor to continue advocating for male welfare with unwavering determination.
Stephen Letoo married Irene Renoi, his long-term companion, in a grand event on April 20 at Narok County’s Ole Ntimama Stadium.
