Kenyan actress Winnie Bwire, best known for her role in the popular TV series “Sultana,” has tragically succumbed to breast cancer while undergoing treatment in Turkey.
The actress passed away on September 5, 2024, as confirmed by her family, who expressed their deep grief and gratitude for the support they received during her battle.
“We thank you all for your overwhelming support, prayers, and generous giving during her treatment. We will share more details in due course. God bless you all,” her family stated.
Winnie Bwire’s fight with cancer began more than three years ago, initially manifesting as swelling and discomfort under her armpits, which was initially mistaken for a routine infection. As the pain persisted, she sought further medical evaluation, which led to the discovery of her breast cancer.
Her journey was fraught with challenges, and she revealed that while the early stages of her illness were manageable, her condition worsened significantly after filming for “Sultana” concluded.
A PET scan later revealed that the cancer had metastasized to her brain, bones, and other organs. Due to the severe effects on her balance and coordination, her treatment focused primarily on brain cancer.
“After finishing Sultana, the cancer worsened. The PET scan confirmed it had spread,” she shared in a heartfelt disclosure of her battle.
Just a month before her passing, on August 14, she made a public appeal for financial support to continue her treatment.
Winnie’s openness about her struggle was both moving and empowering, shedding light on the harsh realities of living with cancer and the stigma that often accompanies the disease. “The stigma drags us down, and people see you as nothing more than the disease,” she poignantly remarked.
Her passing is a significant loss to the Kenyan entertainment industry and a poignant reminder of the ongoing battle against cancer.
