Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu on Thursday, August 24, called for stronger ties between BRICS ( Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) and African countries.
Speaking during the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg, Suluhu noted that BRICS should support Africa’s endeavor in promoting and strengthening regional value chains.
According to the Tanzanian president, the bloc should also facilitate African countries to gain access to the global export markets.
She at the same time emphasized the need for BRICS to play a key role in the realization of Agenda 2063, Sustainable Development Goals.
The Tanzanian head of state also noted that the bloc can come up with mechanisms for facilitating the operationalization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“Tanzania is and remains a strong supporter of multilateralism, more inclusive and fair global systems, and deeper South-South cooperation,” stated President Samia.
Samia also called for the need to reform the UN Security Council to make it more effective.
“Tanzania at this point would wish to reiterate the need to reform the UN Security Council to make it fairly representative, effective, and reflective of the current geopolitical realities,” she noted.
Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are the current members of BRICS.
The BRICS membership is expected to increase to 11 members in January 2024 after the inclusion of Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
