President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has rewarded the national football team with honours, land plots, and apartments for making it to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles suffered a 2-1 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast in Abidjan on Sunday, February 11, 2024. However, President Tinubu expressed pride in the team despite the disappointment of the loss when he greeted them at the presidential villa in Abuja.
“It’s tough to face defeat, especially with high expectations, but you’ve demonstrated sportsmanship, resilience, and team spirit throughout the tournament,” President Tinubu said as he welcomed the team back at the presidential villa.
Each player in the national squad was awarded the Member of the Order of the Niger, one of the country’s highest honours, along with an apartment and a piece of land in the area around the capital.
Since taking office last year, Tinubu has seen petrol prices triple and living costs rise sharply. Many Nigerians had hoped that victory would bring some much-needed joy as they grappled with the economic crisis.
“Let’s not be disheartened by this passing event but come together to work harder… You can be our heroes tomorrow, so don’t give up on your pursuit. My administration is here to fulfill dreams,” he added.

Nigerian authorities promptly provided the Super Eagles with forms to allocate the promised land. Head coach José Peseiro thanked the Nigerian president for this gesture toward the players.
“I’m 60 years old, and this is the first time a president has invited me to his house. It’s an honor and a source of pride for me. I believe we’ve done a fantastic job. Our team showed great spirit and played well,” said the former assistant to Queiroz at Real Madrid.
