Super Metro ordered to dismiss 269 drivers over qualifications concerns

The Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) has issued a directive requiring Super Metro bus Sacco to terminate the services of 269 of its drivers, citing qualification concerns.

The ruling, made on April 14, 2025, follows a comprehensive review of the Sacco’s compliance with road safety and transport licensing regulations.

Although the board halted an earlier proposed suspension of Super Metro’s operations, it placed the Sacco under strict compliance measures.

Among the conditions laid out by TLAB are the immediate dismissal of unqualified drivers and a mandate for thorough inspection of several of the Sacco’s vehicles.

The decision comes in the wake of mounting concerns over the safety and compliance standards of public transport operators across the country.

According to TLAB, some of the drivers employed by Super Metro were found to have violated traffic rules, particularly in cases involving speeding and failure to meet the required retest standards.

The Sacco is now expected to ensure that all drivers undergo retesting and meet the necessary qualifications before resuming duties.

Super Metro, known for its relatively disciplined operations and high standards among Nairobi’s matatu industry, now faces intense scrutiny as the board pushes for adherence to traffic laws and public safety.

The SACCO will also need to present several of its vehicles for thorough roadworthiness inspections.

The ruling has sparked widespread public debate, with commuters and industry stakeholders watching closely to see how the popular transport provider will respond.

While some have praised the board’s decision as a move toward safer public transport, others worry about the potential disruptions to services and the livelihoods of the affected drivers.

As the SACCO prepares to comply with the ruling, all eyes will be on how it navigates this period of intense scrutiny while maintaining its services across Nairobi and its outskirts.
