Supervisor, 13 teachers arrested over cheating in the ongoing KCSE exam

Police have detained an exam supervisor in Marsabit on suspicion of illegally possessing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam papers.

Marsabit County Police Commander Leonard Kimaiyo confirmed the arrest, stating that officers from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) apprehended the suspect around 4 p.m. on Monday November 11, 2024.

The supervisor was reportedly found with eight copies of the Kiswahili literature exam paper, sparking concerns about a potential exam breach.

Authorities are conducting further investigations to assess the extent of the leak, with KNEC reinforcing its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the national examination process.

In a related case, thirteen teachers including nine invigilators are being held at Nyamninia Secondary School in Gem, Yala sub-county on similar charges.

The teachers were detained after students were found with photocopied answers to the Mathematics Paper 2 exam.

Among those arrested are the school’s exam supervisor, a Board of Management (BOM) teacher from St. Mary’s School Yala, Nyamninia Secondary School’s center manager, and his deputy.

KNEC officials overseeing the exams noticed suspicious behavior among the candidates around 10:15 a.m on Monday during the Mathematics Paper 2 session.

A subsequent search revealed photocopied answers in the possession of both a candidate and the examination supervisor, identified as Mr. Isaac Wesonga.

Several students were allegedly caught trying to hide or destroy evidence, suggesting coordinated cheating efforts.

A swift response from a multi-agency team, led by Deputy County Commissioner Evans Otieno and the sub-county director of education, led to the arrests.
