Suspects in the murder of athlete Benjamin Kiplagat to remain in custody for 21 days

The two suspected killers of Kenyan born Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplagat will be remanded for 21 days to allow for investigations this is after an Eldoret court granted police investigators the 21 days to find more evidence.

The investigating officer Inyasio Mwaniki pleaded with the court to grant more to so as to fully analyze the evidence used to apprehend the two suspects, David Ekhai Lokere and Peter Ushuru Khalumi

Lokere and Khlumi was arrest on new year a day after Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead in his car with a stab wound on his neck.

The incident was reported in Kimumu estate in the outskirts of Eldoret town.

However the motive of the killing is not yet established.

Confirming the arrests, Moiben police boss Stephen Okal said that money and a mobile phone were stolen from the 34-year-old athlete, hinting that it could be a criminal incident.

Okal revealed that the suspects linked to the murder of the Olympian have been positively identified and are wanted criminals who have long tormented locals.

Kiplagat, a runner for nearly two decades, earned a silver medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2008 World Junior Championships and a bronze at the 2012 Africa Championships.

He reached the semi-finals at the 2012 London Olympics and competed in Rio in 2016. Sadly, he passed away, marking another loss in the running world.
