Embakasi East MP Babu Owino now holds a blue belt in Karate.
The legislator graded from white belt to blue belt during a tournament held at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, October 1.
The tournament, dubbed the 2023 Patron’s Karate Championship, was organised by World Authority Traditional Karate Association of Kenya (WATKA), and brought together participants from all the 47 counties.
“I came here for grading and It’s only that I cannot take Hassan Mandonga famous line ‘Sugunyo’ because it is his and he is also a boxer not a Karataker like me.
It’s not about being the best, it’s about being better than you were yesterday. From white belt I have now been promoted to blue belt,” Babu told journalists while receiving his new title.
Taking to social media to express his delight at this fete, Babu jokingly said that he will now be dealing with his counterparts in Parliament.
“Today was the D Day. This is how I will deal with Kenya Kwanza MPs who are cantankerous. Hakuna kucheka na Mtu this time round.”
Understanding Karate Belt Colours
Many martial art disciplines have their own belt progression from a low level to a more advanced level. Historically, the belts get darker as the student advances.
The white belt symbolizes a birth or beginning of a person’s will to acquire the skills of karate, and it is worn by those who are just beginning their study.
Blue represents the sky and the light it provides all growing things. So the blue belt is given to students at the stage of their studies when they begin to learn additional knowledge of the martial art that allows their minds and bodies to continue to grow and develop.
