National NewsNews

A Middle-aged man was found dead in a police cell in Tala on Friday ,leaving many with more questions than answers over how he met his untimely demise. Subsequently, the police Moved the body to Kangundo Hospital Mortuary, however without informing the family or the next of kin.

The deceased identified as Julius Mutuku Ngomoli from Kiliku village, Kyaume sub-location, Tala location, was arrested by Assistant Chief Kyaume Ancent Musembi three days ago for allegedly stealing beans.

Ngomoli was arraigned in court on Friday morning for plea-taking, but later died in his cell in the evening. Sources close to the police station suggest that he may have committed suicide by hanging himself using a belt.

Tala MCA Jackson Ndaka said he got wind of the news while in Tala and rushed to the station with around 15 people. Upon reaching the station, they found the lights off, and the police Land Cruiser had been reversed to the entrance to ferry the body to Kangundo Mortuary. He asked the OCS Tala why they did so, but he remained silent.

Ndaka followed the police Land Cruiser with some Tala residents, stating that the body should not be removed without a relative confirming.

Ndaka called on Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to overhaul the officers at the station, as some had overstayed and others had even opened businesses.

After seeing the body, Patrick Ngomoli, the brother, stated that the body looked like it had been beaten. He expressed having many unanswered questions since they were informed when the suspect was arrested but not when he killed himself.

After seeing the body, Tala MCA and the family suggested that the body seemed to have been beaten and tortured inside the police cells, and investigations into the same should be conducted.

The late was 36 years old and the last born in a family of 11 children.
