Tanzania’s former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi died on February 29, 2024 while receiving treatment at Mzena Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
The former Tanzanian President was suffering from lung cancer. His death was announced by President Samia Suluhu.
“On behalf of the government of the republic of Tanzania, I extend my condolences to the family, relatives and friends and all Tanzanians for this great loss to the nation,” said President Suluhu.
President Suluhu added that Mwinyi had been receiving treatment in London, since November 2023, before he returned to the country early this year.

The Tanzanian President has announced 7 days of mourning, in honour of the former national leader.
Flags will fly at half-mast throughout the country, during the seven days of mourning.
Mwinyi served as Tanzania’s second president from 1985 to 1995, after taking over from first President Julius Nyerere.

Hassan Mwinyi served as a teacher in Tanzania before he later joined politics, just like his predecessor Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
Before he became President, Mwinyi served as an ambassador to Egypt, Home Affairs Minister and Vice President.
Mwinyi will be laid to rest on March 2, 2024 in Zanzibar.
