Tanzania introduces post of deputy prime minister

President Samia Suluhu on August 30, made key adjustments to her cabinet and introduced the new position of deputy prime minister in Tanzania.

The changes were announced by Chief Secretary Moses Kusiluka in a press statement.

Beneficiaries in the changes include former Minerals Minister Dotto Mashaka Biteko who has been named as the deputy Prime minister.

Biteko will be in charge of coordination of government affairs and Minister for Energy.

He becomes the second leader to serve as deputy Prime Minister in Tanzania, after Augustine Mrema served in a similar capacity in the 1990s along with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

January Makamba was transferred from the Energy Ministry to become Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.

Dr. Stergomena Tax leaves the Foreign Affairs docket to return to the Ministry of Defense where she replaces Innocent Bashungwa who has been named Minister of Works.

Prof. Makame Mbarawa who was the Minister of Works and Transport, now takes over the newly formed Ministry of Transport.

The President has also appointed Ukonga MP Jerry William Silaa as the new Minister for Land, Housing, and Human Settlement.

At the same time, Angela Jasmine Kairuki has been transferred to the Ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources.

Damas Ndumbaro who was the Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs has been relocated to the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports switching dockets with Pindi Chana.

On the other hand, Mohamed Mchengerwa was named as Minister of State in the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PROLAG).
