Mombasa court jails Tanzanian woman for 45 years over drugs trafficking

A middle aged Tanzanian woman has been sentenced to 45 years imprisonment for being in possession of heroin worth sixteen million in Mombasa County.

A Mombasa Court, led by Principal Magistrate Martin Rabera on January 30, 2024 found Maimuna Jumanne Amir guilty for drug trafficking.

This was after she was found with 5,389 grams of heroin worth Ksh.16,167,000.

The narcotics were concealed in a black travel bag.

Maimuna was fined Ksh48,501,000 three times the value of the drugs in her possession.

She will serve 10 years in prison for the offence of trafficking narcotic drugs, contrary to Section 4(a) of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act No. 4 of 1994.

Additionally, she will serve 35 years in prison.

Maimuna was arrested on March 14th 2021 at the Moi International Airport in Changamwe Sub-county, Mombasa County.

In his judgement, Hon. Rabera ruled that the prosecution, led by Prosecution Counsel Barbara Sombo, proved its case to the standard provided under the law.

The court indicated that 16 prosecution witnesses gave collaborative evidence against the accused, linking her to the crime.

However, the court also ruled that the accused failed to clear herself of the charges against her, leaving the court with no choice but to convict and sentence her in accordance with the law.
