Tanzania’s President shakes up cabinet ahead of 2025 elections

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has dismissed two senior ministers.

This included the head of the foreign ministry, as part of a mini-cabinet reshuffle.

This change comes as the nation gears up for national elections next year.

Among those dismissed is Information Minister Nape Nnauye, who recently found himself at the centre of controversy.

Last week, a video of Nnauye went viral, in which he remarked,

“Winning in elections is not always determined by the number of votes in the ballot box but depends on who counts and announces the results.”

The comment sparked widespread criticism from both the opposition and his ruling party.

Although Nnauye apologized, claiming his words were taken out of context and meant as a joke, the damage was done.

The presidency’s statement, released late Sunday, did not provide specific reasons for the dismissals.

However, it did announce Mahmoud Thabit Kombo as the new Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, replacing January Makamba.

Jerry Silaa was appointed to replace Nnauye as the Minister for Information, Communications, and IT.

This reshuffle has prompted speculation about President Hassan’s strategy for the upcoming 2025 election.

Abel Kinyondo, a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, suggests that the reshuffle might be a power play in preparation for the election.

Since taking office in 2021 after the death of John Magafuli, Hassan has distanced herself from Magafuli’s authoritarian policies.

Samia Suluhu has implemented political reforms, including easing restrictions on the media and the opposition.

Opposition politician John Mnyika weighed in on the controversy.

Asserting that Nnauye’s statement hinted at underlying issues within the government and ruling party.

His remarks have added fuel to the already fiery political landscape in Tanzania.

As the nation looks ahead to the 2025 elections, President Hassan’s actions indicate a clear intention to strengthen her position and address any internal challenges.

Samia Suluhu’s focus on reform and political stability is a marked shift from her predecessor’s approach.

Offering hope for a more open and democratic process.

Tanzanians and international observers alike are keenly watching these developments.

Anticipating what the future holds for the country under Hassan’s leadership.

With the reshuffle, President Hassan has shown her commitment to maintaining integrity and trust in the electoral process.

A crucial step as the nation moves towards the 2025 elections.
