Taxes have never destroyed a country – President Ruto

President William Ruto has come out strongly to defend the increased taxes under the Kenya Kwanza government that have seemingly left a larger percentage of Kenyans agitated.

Addressing mourners in a burial ceremony in Njabini, Nyandarua County on Tuesday, December 2, 2023, President Ruto said that taxes have never brought a nation to its knees, but debts have.

The Head of State argued that most developed countries achieved their status due to the taxes imposed by their governments, and that is the route his regime has taken.

“Many nations have been destroyed by debt, but there is no single nation that has been destroyed by taxes. Many progressive countries have been built by their taxes, and that is where we need to go,” President Ruto said.

According to the President, Kenyans voted for them in the 2022 General Elections because they believed in their agenda to transform Kenya, and they will ensure that they live up to those expectations.

He hinted that his government may be forced to ignore the court orders that have been served and others that may be served to pause his development agenda.

“We are supposed to initiate affordable housing projects in Engineer and Ol Kalou, and are we supposed to wait for the judiciary to tell us what to do?” he posed.

In his words, most of his development projects like Affordable Housing and Universal Health Coverage are in line with the constitution, as healthcare and shelter are every Kenyan’s right – hinting at a possible sabotage by unnamed individuals.
