Teacher Shiko: The self-taught dancer inspiring young minds

Alice Wanjiku Maina, fondly known as Tr. Shiko by her students, has turned her love for dance and children into a thriving career.

A self-taught dancer, she has redefined the role of dance in early childhood education, inspiring young minds one step at a time.

From a young age, Alice knew that dance was her passion.

Though life took her on a different path, she never let go of her dream.

After completing high school, she began teaching Sunday school children dance routines, blending her love for movement with her deep care for young learners.

One unexpected phone call changed everything.

A friend asked if she could choreograph a dance for a kindergarten graduation.

The school was so impressed with her creativity and energy that what was meant to be a one-time gig turned into a permanent opportunity.

The institution incorporated dance into its curriculum, and soon, Alice was teaching there twice a week.

Her success story didn’t stop there.

Over the years, the mother of two has expanded her reach, introducing her dance program to multiple schools across Nanyuki.

Today, several schools have her program as part of their weekly schedule, providing children with a fun, engaging, and healthy way to express themselves.

Creating a safe and uplifting space for kids

Alice, a devoted mother of two, is deeply mindful of the kind of music she introduces to young minds.

Raised in a Christian home, she ensures that all the songs used in her classes have clean, uplifting lyrics that align with her values.

Beyond the classroom, Alice has taken her passion a step further by founding the Dunamis Dance Program.

An initiative that offers structured dance classes, holiday programs, and fitness activities designed to keep children active, engaged, and positively influenced.

Speaking to TV47 Digital, she shared her motivation: “I have always loved to dance, long before I even had words to express it.

There is something about movement that is relaxing, invigorating, and expressive.

I want kids to not only have fun but also have a healthy outlet.”

Through her work, Alice is doing more than just teaching dance.

She is shaping young hearts, instilling confidence, and proving that passion, when nurtured, can become a life-changing force.
