Teenage robbers in police uniforms arrested in Baringo, stolen items recovered

Police officers in Kabarnet, Baringo County have arrested nine suspected robbers including teenagers who were wearing fake police uniforms. 

Several stolen items including electronics, clothes and furniture were recovered from the suspects during a security operation in Kabarnet town on Sunday January 28, 2024.

Among the suspects are teenagers and a family of three – a husband, wife, and their son. 

According to the police, the recovered items, primarily electronics, furniture, and household goods were stolen during the December holidays.

Baringo County Police Commandant Julius Kiragu said that they managed to recover the items following a security operation which they conducted with the area with the support of chiefs and Nyumba Kumi elders.

Speaking to TV47, Kiragu maintained that those who were arrested are key suspects responsible for terrorizing residents in Kabarnet town.

“We have been receiving complaints about robbers breaking into people’s houses, especially when there are no people staying there or at night when people are sleeping,” said Kiragu.

“I want to assure the public that cases of robbery in this area is now a thing of the past, we are investigating the matter to arrest more accomplices involved in selling of stolen goods  in the region,” he added.

He added that the officers will interrogate the suspects to establish more information on how they get fake police uniforms used in criminal activities.

He also urged members of the public to be alert and report suspected criminals or criminal activities to the police.

At the same time, several residents turned up at the police station to identify some of their stolen property.

“They came at midnight when we were all sleeping, broke the door and escaped with most of my electronics,” said Stephen Kipruto, who identified some of his stolen items at the police post.

Some of the areas which are majorly targeted by the robbers include Kaptimbor, Mumol, Kapkut and Cereals.

The suspects are being held at the Kabarnet police station, awaiting arraignment at Kabarnet law courts.
