Ten arrested, 14,700 liters of ‘muratina’ destroyed in Dandora raid

A crackdown led by officers from the Stapol Dandora unit on Wednesday saw ten persons arrested in Dandora Phase V, Nairobi, during an ongoing operation targeting illegal alcohol production and distribution.

According to a police statement, one of the suspects — a woman — was apprehended for allegedly running an unlicensed local liquor operation.

The remaining nine suspects were detained for their suspected involvement in the underground alcohol trade.

During the operation, authorities confiscated 215 liters of muratina, a traditional homemade alcoholic beverage, along with a 50 kilogram sack of sugar, which is commonly used in the brewing process.

In addition to the seized items, police reported that they destroyed a staggering 14,700 liters of muratina on site, ensuring it would not make its way to the public.

The woman arrested is expected to face multiple charges, including the unlawful manufacturing of alcohol and possession of over 200 liters of the unauthorised drink.

All ten suspects were taken to Dandora Police Station and will be brought before a court to answer to the charges.

Authorities have emphasized that the enforcement action is part of a wider campaign to tackle the growing issue of unregulated alcohol in the region.

Law enforcement officials have committed to intensifying efforts to identify and dismantle such illegal operations, which are believed to pose health risks and contribute to social problems within local communities.

Police have urged the public to report any suspicious brewing activities as they continue their efforts to rid the area of dangerous, unauthorized alcoholic substances.

The anti-illicit alcohol operation remains active, with more raids expected in the coming days.
