Tensions escalate in Bangale: 8 die in Inter-Clan clashes over land disputes

Tensions remain high in the Bangale sub-county, Tana River, following renewed inter-clan clashes over land disputes that have tragically claimed eight lives. The violence, which began last week, has escalated, with warring communities using firearms, bows, and arrows in the confrontations. Security forces are struggling to restore order.

The skirmishes were triggered at a watering point in Anole, where a dispute between two communities led to the shooting of 75-year-old Said Maliu and 35-year-old Juma Mohammed. This incident sparked a series of confrontations, including in the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) area, where flood victims had recently settled. In this area, village elder Daud Shora, aged 58, was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

Bangale Police Commander Ephraim Karani confirmed the fatalities and assured the bereaved families that justice would be served. He noted that the clashes have intensified, with tensions rising sharply on Friday as the communities continued to fight over ongoing land disputes.

“We responded swiftly and deployed adequate security personnel to restore calm,” Karani said, emphasizing that without their intervention, the situation could have worsened further. Police also managed to rescue schoolchildren and teachers who were targeted in a possible retaliatory attack.

Commander Karani mentioned that individuals in possession of illegal firearms have been identified, and arrests will be made soon. Despite these efforts, tension remains palpable in the affected villages, prompting increased police patrols to prevent further violence.

On Friday afternoon, members of one community stormed Madogo police station, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the killings in Anole and the KBC area. The residents are also calling for action against individuals with illegal firearms and have accused some politicians of inciting violence by pitting communities against each other.

As the clashes continue, fears and frustrations within the community are growing, leaving many anxious for a resolution. The need for law and order is critical as security personnel work to contain the situation and bring those responsible for the violence to justice.
