Shabana FC interim coach Oscar Kambona claims the club has navigated through turbulent waters and is now on course to enjoy good times in the Kenyan Premier League.
Shabana has had a tough ride in the Kenyan top flight since sealing their return after 17 years in the cold.
The club, which won the National Super League to reclaim KPL status, stayed glued in the relegation zone, a situation that saw them part ways with head coach Sammy Okoth, who had steered them back to the top flight.
“I believe we still have depth in the team. I believe it was just a matter of time for them to gain experience to play in the Premier League,” Kambona said.
On Saturday, December 16, 2023, Shabana claimed what is their biggest win of the campaign by beating 2009 league champions Sofapaka 4-1 at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
Kambona, who has been in charge of the Kisii-based side since Okoth’s departure, gained confidence from the result, asserting that their bad days were clearly behind them.
In his own words, Shabana’s lackluster performances have been due to the team’s lack of experience in the top flight, but his troops have rapidly gained ground and are now able to take on their opponents comfortably.
“They are now learning how to take on the opponents without being scared, without being afraid. The confidence is back in the team, and the more we keep on, the more we will mature,” Kambona added.
