Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has praised Bruno Fernandes for his remarkable leadership and goal-scoring ability but believes the Portuguese star needs to trust his teammates more. Fernandes’ recent hat-trick in United’s 4-1 Europa League victory against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford further showcased his importance to the team.
A Player of Mixed Opinions
Bruno Fernandes is a player who divides opinion. While he has earned praise for his consistent performances, he has also faced harsh criticism. Former United captain Gary Neville condemned his captaincy after the team’s humiliating 7-0 defeat to Liverpool in March 2023. Similarly, another club legend, Roy Keane, criticized Fernandes’ performances and dismissed claims that the season would be worse without him, sarcastically asking, “how much worse could it be?”
The Team’s Top Performer
Despite the criticism, Fernandes remains United’s top scorer with 15 goals this season. None of his teammates have reached double figures. His goals have been crucial in turning losses into draws and draws into wins. In 12 matches where he scored, his contribution was decisive in eight of them.
In recent weeks, Fernandes scored a crucial goal in the draw against Arsenal, netted the equalizer in an FA Cup tie against Fulham, and delivered a stunning free-kick against Everton to keep United in the game. Against Sociedad, he rescued the team again after falling behind, keeping their hopes of winning a trophy and securing a European spot alive.
A Perfect Captain with a Flaw
Ruben Amorim acknowledges Fernandes’ talent and leadership. “When we need it, he is always there,” Amorim said. “He can bring the ball forward. He can score goals. He is a perfect captain for our team, and we need to help him win titles.”
However, Amorim pointed out a flaw in Fernandes’ game. The Portuguese midfielder often disrupts United’s shape by leaving his position in search of possession. Amorim believes this stems from Fernandes’ frustration and intense desire to win. “We know he wants to win so badly, and when things are not going well, he changes position and goes after the ball. Sometimes he needs to trust his teammates,” Amorim added.
A Reliable Warrior
One of Fernandes’ most notable qualities is his durability. Only fellow Portuguese player Diogo Dalot has made more appearances this season among United’s outfield players. Fernandes’ fitness and availability have been vital for a team struggling in the Premier League, currently sitting 14th and heading for their worst campaign since relegation in 1973-74.
Carrying the Team Forward
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes praised Fernandes’ recent performances, noting his shift to a deeper role. “Over this last six-to-seven weeks, he’s been brilliant. He’s carrying this team to a little bit of success,” Scholes said on TNT Sports.
As Manchester United faces a challenging season, Bruno Fernandes’ leadership and goal-scoring prowess have kept the team afloat. However, for United to achieve greater success, Fernandes must learn to trust his teammates and maintain the team’s structure on the pitch.
