President William Ruto has, for the umpteenth time, echoed his resolve to transform Kenya into what he terms as a state he desires, despite the distractions he is facing from the opposition.

In a passionate address, President Ruto implored that it was impossible to develop a country using debts and that he was courageous enough to take the bold decisions that his predecessors feared taking.

The head of state brushed off the criticism he is facing from the opposition camp over the increased taxation, stating that the revenue will be used to transform the nation.

“We have to build our resources. But because it is a difficult decision to make, nobody wants to make it. We have to change our country, and we are going to do it. These people criticizing us will be the ones who will be clapping for us,” he said.

Taxes have never destroyed a country – President Ruto

A fortnight ago, President Ruto came out strongly to defend the increased taxes under the Kenya Kwanza government that have seemingly left a larger percentage of Kenyans agitated.

Addressing mourners in a burial ceremony in Njabini, Nyandarua County on Tuesday, December 2, 2023, he said that taxes have never brought a nation to its knees, but debts have.

The Head of State argued that most developed countries achieved their status due to the taxes imposed by their governments, and that is the route his regime has taken.

“Many nations have been destroyed by debt, but there is no single nation that has been destroyed by taxes. Many progressive countries have been built by their taxes, and that is where we need to go,” the president said.
