“They must go!” – Governor Ntutu insists 194 transferred police officers must leave the stations immediately

Narok East police officers who were transferred recently following the death of 25 sheep and two young men must leave the police stations immediately, Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu has said.

Speaking at Suswa Trading Centre on Wednesday, January 29, Governor Ntutu said the 194 police officers in the sub-county should leave, this despite the Labour Court temporarily stopping the process.

Governor Ntutu admitted to have initiated the transfer of the officers through the Office of the Attorney General after the two young men were allegedly shot dead by police officers in a protest at Duka Moja area on January 17, 2025.

During the incident, the locals had barricaded the Narok-Mai Mahiu Road to protest the knocking and killing of a flock of sheep by a speeding vehicle.

Attempts by the police to unblock the road faced stern opposition from the locals causing the police to shoot in the air to scare the irate mob.

The running battle between the police and the locals reportedly led to two people shot dead, one police officer chopped off his left hand and nine people among them seven police officers left nursing serious injuries.

The Governor said he will leave no stone unturned until all the officers stationed in Narok East Sub-County are transferred and replaced by new faces.

“Since I was born, I have never heard of an officer who do not want to go on transfer. What is this so special that they are benefiting from in Narok that they do not want to go on transfer,” he said.

Activist Memba Charo filed a petition challenging the legality of the arbitrary transfer of the police officers. He argues that the “abrupt and punitive” tranfers are a violation of the Service Standing Orders.

“The affected officers, many of whom were still recovering from injuries, were not given adequate notice, facilitation, or consideration of their medical and family situations,” the petition reads in part.

Justice Nduma Nderi, on Tuesday, January 28, ordered the NPS and the Interior Ministry to initiate proper transfer protocol and pay the officers their allowances before embarking on the transfers.
