Police in Thika, Kiambu County, on Tuesday, February 25 intercepted a vehicle carrying seven sacks of bhang with an estimated street value of KSh5 million.
Three occupants of the vehicle, however, managed to escape the police dragnet.
Confirming the incident, Thika Sub-County Police Commander Lawrence Muchangi said that the operation was a joint effort between the police and community policing members, who had laid an ambush at Kiganjo Estate—an area notorious for drug trafficking.
The sting operation, the police boss says, targeted a well-known drug baron, who has been on the police watchlist and has previously been arrested on similar charges.
Despite multiple arrests, it is reported that the suspect has repeatedly secured release through bonds and continues to be a key supplier of bhang in the region.
Police have launched a manhunt for him and are urging the public to provide any information on his whereabouts.
The impounded vehicle is currently being held at Kimuchu Police Post as investigations continue.
