The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned three Members of Parliament, a Member of Kitui County Assembly (MCA), and a former Woman Representative in connection with allegations of incitement and the destruction of a police station.
This investigation stems from a recent attack on the Kona Kaliti Police Station in Kitui South, where vandals, believed to be from Tana River, damaged the station by breaking windows, removing the roof, and stealing solar panels and other equipment.
Additionally, the NCIC is investigating claims that these leaders incited Tana River residents to invade Kitui County to graze camels and obstruct the construction of the Katumba Police Station.
The individuals summoned include notable political figures:
- MP Yakub Kuno (Bura)
- MP Said Hiribae (Galole)
- MP Amina Dika (Tana River Woman Representative)
- Bangale MCA Jibril Farah
- Former Tana River Woman Representative Rehema Hassan
Their participation in the investigation is crucial as the NCIC seeks to determine the circumstances surrounding the raid on the police station. These leaders bring diverse perspectives that could be key to understanding the events that led to the attack.
The summoned leaders are expected to report to the NCIC offices in Nairobi’s Upper Hill on October 8 at 10 a.m.
Kitui County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto confirmed that the attackers forcibly removed police officers from the station, which was still under construction. He noted that many Tana River residents have moved into Kitui County with their livestock, occupying protected areas like the South Kitui National Game Reserve.
NCIC Acting Chairman Harrison Kariuki warned the leaders not to ignore the summons, stressing the importance of maintaining peace along the Kitui-Tana River border. Rutto also emphasized that no leader is above the law, adding that those found inciting violence will be held accountable. He urged residents to remain calm and stressed the importance of law and order in the region.
