Thrilled KWS announces birth of a black rhino at Sera Community Sanctuary

The Kenya Wildlife Service has announced the birth of a black rhino calf at Sera Community Rhino Sanctuary in Samburu.

The Service, on Monday, April 28, said that the KWS Wamba Platoon team, together with Sera rhino monitors, sighted the proud mother and her healthy male calf a few days ago.

“Every birth is a victory for conservation — together, we are securing the future of this iconic species!” A thrilled KWS announced.

Another healthy female black rhino calf was birthed at Loisaba Conservancy on February 2, 2025. The calf was born to Seiya—one of the 21 eastern black rhinos translocated to Loisaba in early 2024.

The special calf was named Roz, in honour of Rosamond (“Roz”) Zander, the late wife of Hansjörg Wyss. Roz was a passionate advocate for possibility, creativity, and human potential, dedicating her life to helping people reimagine their role in the world through her work as a family therapist, leadership coach, and author.

“Roz’s birth is not only a conservation success but also a symbol of the powerful collaboration that made her arrival possible,” Loisaba said.

Kenya’s black rhino population has more than doubled – from fewer than 400 in the 1980s to 1,004 at the start of 2024 – according to figures from the KWS.

An endangered iconic species, the black rhino has faced relentless threats to their survival from poaching, habitat loss and increased frequency of droughts driven by climate change. It has been classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List

Kenya’s incredible rise in numbers of black rhinos in recent years has been touted a huge success by conservationists. Kenya is halfway to its goal of 2,000 black rhinos by 2037.
