Tight security in Nairobi ahead of President Ruto’s State of the Nation Address

Anti- riot police officers were deployed around Parliament buildings in Nairobi and other parts of the city on Thursday November 21, 2024 as part of preparations for President William Ruto’s State of the Nation Address.

President Ruto is set to address the nation during the afternoon session of Parliament on Thursday.

Heavy police deployment was also witnessed around key locations, including State House, Supreme Court among other government institutions in the capital city.

The President’s address comes at a time when most Kenyans were dissatisfied with the government’s efforts in dealing with corruption, abductions, and an alarming rise in femicide cases.

Meanwhile, activists were rallying their supporters to protest in different parts of Nairobi under the banner “Occupy Parliament” as the president addresses the nation.

However, the National Police Service (NPS) on Wednesday warned members of the public against participating in the protests, saying that such demonstrations were prohibited.

NPS cited the organizers’ failure to notify authorities of the time and location of their protests, as required by law.

Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula had confirmed that the President will deliver the address in Parliament on Thursday afternoon.

The State of the Nation Address is a constitutional requirement under Article 132, which requires the President to update citizens on critical issues such as national security.

President Ruto is expected to outline his government’s achievements and efforts to address these issues, as well as respond to public concerns.
