AFC Leopards head coach Tom Juma has provided insight into the club’s disappointing start to the 2023/24 Kenyan Premier League season.
Despite having played three matches, AFC Leopards has yet to find the back of the net, currently occupying the 12th spot on the league table and Juma has some explanation.
“You have to work every day and every week. If you look at the composition of our team, (we have) a lot of new players. It takes time before they gel,” Juma said.
The 1998 champions drew their season opener 0-0 against FC Talanta, suffered a 1-0 loss to KCB shortly after, and most recently played to a 0-0 draw at home against Muhoroni Youth on September 16, 2023.
Tom Juma assumed the role of head coach in July 2023 after the departure of Belgian tactician Patrick Aussems, transitioning from his previous position as team manager.
He was joined by former Wazito FC head coach Fred Ambani as his assistant.
Despite their legendary status within the club, positive results have been elusive, which has understandably frustrated the fans.
They have called for Juma’s sacking, but AFC Leopards’ leadership has emphatically expressed their confidence in their head coach terming him the right person to lead the team.
In a statement released on September 20, 2023, the club stated, “The management of the Club is pleased to announce its unwavering confidence in the leadership of the technical bench, headed by Mr. Tom Juma.”
AFC Leopards leadership asks fans to rally behind Juma
However, AFC Leopards’ leadership has called upon the fans to rally behind both Juma and Ambani.
“We call upon our dedicated fans to remain optimistic and continue supporting the team passionately. Your unwavering support is the driving force behind our success, and together, we can achieve greatness and make this season one to remember.”
