Tough luck! Faith Kipyegon disqualified from the 5,000m final due to a collision with Ethiopia’s Tsegay

World 1500m record holder Faith Kipyegon had her silver medal taken from her and awarded to Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands after the Kenyan was disqualified from the 5000m final due to a collision with Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay.

In the race, Beatrice Chebet took an early lead and stayed grouped with compatriots Kipyegon and Margaret Kipkemboi through much of the race, keeping her cool as Kipyegon and Tsegay collided at the start of the penultimate lap.

Faith Kipyegon crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 14:29.60. However, she was later disqualified from the event.

The world record holder was left in tears after the decision, and the obvious next move is to appeal.
