Tragedy as man drowns while swimming with friends at a waterfall

A 27-year-old man tragically drowned while swimming with friends at Wanyiba Falls in the Rwamuthambi River in Mwea-West, Kirinyaga County.

According to witnesses, the victim, identified as Peter Muhia, was swimming with three friends around 3 p.m. on Wednesday when the incident occurred. Patrick Muchoki, one of the friends, recounted the heartbreaking moment.

“We were all enjoying ourselves as we’ve swum here before, but suddenly, our friend Peter cried out for help. Despite our efforts, we couldn’t save him,” Muchoki said.

Muhia’s family, led by his aunt, Joyce Wangui, has since camped by the river, pleading for assistance in recovering the body. Wangui expressed concern over the dangers posed by the water volume near Wanyiba Falls, especially for those unfamiliar with the area.

“We are begging for help so we can retrieve Peter’s body and give him a proper burial,” Wangui appealed.

Muhia’s brother, Billy Muhia, spoke of the family’s growing despair as the search continues. “We’ve been searching near the falls, but hope is fading. My aunt even stayed overnight here, but we’ve already reported the matter to Kiamaciri Police Station,” he said.

Residents revealed that this is not the first tragedy at Wanyiba Falls.
