79 dead after night club roof collapses during live Performance in Dominican Republic

A catastrophic incident occurred at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on April 8, 2025, when the roof of the venue collapsed, claiming the lives of at least 79 individuals and injuring many more.

Rescue teams scrambled through the wreckage of bricks, metal beams, and debris to search for survivors. Among those lost in the disaster were well-known figures, including famed merengue artist Rubby Perez, who was performing on stage when the structure gave way.

Also among the dead was retired Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel, who survived the initial collapse but later passed away from injuries.

The nightclub, a staple of the city’s nightlife for over five decades, was packed with 500 to 1,000 people when the tragedy struck shortly after midnight.

Witnesses reported a sudden blackout before the roof came crashing down, causing widespread panic. Eyewitnesses recounted the event as being akin to an earthquake or tsunami, with debris falling unexpectedly onto tables and the floor, triggering a desperate escape for many.

Among the injured were concertgoers who were transported to nearby hospitals, as concerned family members gathered outside the venue seeking news of their loved ones.

The national response has been swift, with President Luis Abinader declaring three days of mourning and urging citizens to donate blood.

As of the latest updates, local authorities continue to work tirelessly at the site, with heavy machinery being used to lift the rubble and help search for more victims.

The Dominican Republic’s tourism industry, which relies heavily on attractions like the city’s vibrant nightlife, has been shaken by the incident.

The Jet Set nightclub, known for its lively performances, had invited fans to enjoy Perez’s greatest hits just hours before the tragedy unfolded.
