Four pupils killed in Busia school fire

Busia, March 18, 2024 – In a devastating turn of events, Busia Victory Primary School in Kisenyi B Village, Busia Municipality, Uganda, was engulfed in flames in the early hours of the morning, claiming the lives of four innocent children. 

The incident has left the community reeling in shock and disbelief.

The fire, which erupted while the children were fast asleep, prompted a swift response from the Fire and Rescue team stationed at Busia Police Station.

Despite their efforts to contain the blaze, the fire proved fatal for four young souls, while one child narrowly escaped with minor injuries.

The victims, Oburu John Richard, Abdul Ali, Magero James and Adero Makhoha, all students of various grades at the school, have tragically suffered charred bodies beyond recognition.

Authorities have transferred their bodies to Busia Health Center IV for postmortem examinations.

The sole survivor, Egesa Alvin, is currently undergoing treatment at BMK Clinic in Busia Municipality, as authorities work tirelessly to determine the cause of the fire that ravaged the boys’ dormitory, reducing it to ashes and leaving 62 pupils homeless.

Calls for support as investigation unfolds

As the investigation led by police fire experts and Criminal Investigations Officers progresses, the community mourns the loss of young lives.

The Director of Busia Victory Primary School has extended condolences to grieving families, assuring support during this harrowing time. Samples for DNA analysis will be collected from parents and relatives to aid in proper identification and handover of the deceased.

Authorities urge patience and cooperation from the public as they unravel the circumstances of this heartbreaking tragedy. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in schools and the need for heightened vigilance to prevent such catastrophes in the future

The community stands united in grief, offering prayers and support to the families affected by this unfathomable loss.
