TSC transfers 17 Isongo secondary school teachers over 2023 KCSE results

National News

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has transferred 17 teachers from St. Gabriel Isongo School in Mumias East, Kakamega County, following an assault on the principal last week due to poor 2023 KCSE results.

This decision came a day after parents and students protested the school’s low performance in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu condemned the issue, urging the TSC to either transfer the teachers or ensure their security.

“This must stop. Some head teachers and principals have been threatened. It is shameful,” Oyuu said.

Oyuu expressed concern that teachers at St. Gabriel Isongo School and two other institutions were at risk of facing attacks.

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Chairperson Omboko Milemba echoed these sentiments, calling for action within 24 hours.

Milemba highlighted the need for enhanced security for teachers nationwide and identified two other affected schools: St Theresa’s Bumini and Kabondi Primary School.

The Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association (KEPSHA) urged the Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki to investigate the issue and arrest the suspects who assaulted the teachers.

“KEPSHA recognizes the significance of holding teachers accountable for academic outcomes, but we firmly denounce any form of harassment or intimidation against school administrators and staff,” KEPSHA national chairman Johnson Nzioka said.

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu also issued a warning to communities engaging in attacks against teachers.

Machogu emphasized that the TSC evaluates teachers’ performance through diverse methods beyond national examinations.

Last Wednesday, residents assaulted St. Gabriel Isongo Secondary School head teacher David Wafula after only two students out of 179 scored C+ and above.
