Our reporter Sharon Barang’a visits the bandit-prone village of Arabal in Baringo to meet children whose resilience and determination to seek education mirrors the words of Psalms 23:4: “Though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
Arabal Primary School is surrounded by Ngelecha Hills. The hills are a hiding place for bandits, and teem with wild animals notably leopards. Sometimes the bandits armed with assault rifles traverse the school compound in broad daylight – when classes are in progress.
The children walking to and from school here are so accustomed to the sound of gun shots that they can distinguish between shots by police (anti-stock theft unit) and the bandits. The bandits are dangerous. They have no regard for human life. It doesn’t matter whether their victims are adults or children. Not so long ago, they shot six children in Mukutani lost their lives to the bandits’ gunfire.
Most ‘Dangerous Ways To School’ is a special feature by TV47 Education desk about the dangers some children go through on their way to and from school. This one from Baringo County, some 300 kilometres from Kenya’s capital Nairobi, is the first in a series of documentaries covering all the 47 counties.

Good work Journalist Sharon Barang'a.
I am very happy to see your excellent work. Kudos.
Although very scary, the Journalist and her assistants managed to make an interesting story such that can help to help top leadership to think deep in their manifestos.
Very unfortunate situation in the area. The UhuRuto government is doing less to help the hard situation.
I love how these pupils are so determined to go to school no matter what, the overflowing river on rainy season, the faulty bridge, the terrain, the lack of security forces around and bandits all over but still manage to go school kudos!
Isabela primary deserves more.
Would you like to know more about these Baringo kids? Do you have a story about children and the challenges they face in their quest to reach school. Kindly reach out and we shall included their experiences in the future. #TV47News

My heart really goes out to these people sound as bad as a Boca Rama we also have problems again with shootings in school but we canβt give up hope I know this is now June 2022
And my prayer is it this that GOD WILL PROTECT AND DELIVER WITH HIS MIGHTY WARRIOR ANGELS OF EVERY RANK AND DIVISION THAT IS NEEDED AND THERE GOVERNMENT THERE WILL Completely eradicate the bandits from that area by sending the Military to totally completely kill them off so the people will be safe
Why are the bandits killing…I mean bandits are interested only in the loot right…why take life??? Cruel!!! Beyond my comprehension!
