Our reporter Sharon Barang’a visits the bandit-prone village of Arabal in Baringo to meet children whose resilience and determination to seek education mirrors the words of Psalms 23:4: “Though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

Arabal Primary School is surrounded by Ngelecha Hills. The hills are a hiding place for bandits, and teem with wild animals notably leopards. Sometimes the bandits armed with assault rifles traverse the school compound in broad daylight – when classes are in progress.

The children walking to and from school here are so accustomed to the sound of gun shots that they can distinguish between shots by police (anti-stock theft unit) and the bandits. The bandits are dangerous. They have no regard for human life. It doesn’t matter whether their victims are adults or children. Not so long ago, they shot six children in Mukutani lost their lives to the bandits’ gunfire.

Most ‘Dangerous Ways To School’ is a special feature by TV47 Education desk about the dangers some children go through on their way to and from school. This one from Baringo County, some 300 kilometres from Kenya’s capital Nairobi, is the first in a series of documentaries covering all the 47 counties.
