Two brothers die while unblocking a sewer manhole in Kapsabet

Grief has engulfed a village in Chesumei, Nandi County after two brothers died while unblocking an underground sewer line in the area.

Weldon Sang, 34, and Davis Sang, 42, died while unblocking sewage in Chemnyango village in Kamngetuny location on Sunday, June 16.

A report filed at Kapsabet Police Station says that the bodies of the brothers were recovered from the sewerage (which is 5 meters below the surface) by Nandi County Disaster Management team.

Confirming the incident, Nandi County Police Commander Dickens Njogu says the brothers had been hired by a plot owner to unblock the sewerage. Davis, the police boss says, was the first to die in the manhole while his brother died while trying to save him.

“Both are suspected to have died of suffocation and lack of oxygen, however an autopsy on the bodies would reveal the true cause of their deaths,” he says.

A businesswoman in the area rued that the deceased had no protective gear when they scaled down the manhole. “With foul smell, there was no way they could survive,” Caro Muhonja says.

The bodies were removed to Nandi Hills Level 4 Hospital mortuary.
