Two Dutch tourists killed in Mariakani crash

Two Dutch tourists lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Wednesday December 11, 2024 in Mariakani along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

The crash occurred at around 7 a.m. near the Maji Ya Chumvi area in Kilifi County. The accident involved a van ferrying tourists and a trailer.

According to the National Police Service spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango, the van was heading towards Nairobi when it veered off its lane and collided with the oncoming trailer.

Four people sustained injuries, including two other tourists, the van’s driver, and a tour guide. They were rushed to the hospital for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

The impact of the collision caused significant damage, trapping some occupants inside the van. Rescuers and local residents worked together to retrieve them.

The accident also caused a massive traffic jam along the busy highway as authorities cleared the wreckage.
