Two including a cop shot dead, 10 injured in clash over control of gold mine in Marsabit

A violent confrontation at the Hilo gold mining site in Moyale, Marsabit County, on Friday, July 19 resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a police officer.

The chaos erupted when a massive group of approximately 3,000 people stormed the site, clashing with security personnel stationed there.

The fallen officer, Constable George Mukoma of the Border Patrol Unit, was assigned to Hilo to combat illegal mining activities. He was shot and killed during the altercation, and his G3 rifle, loaded with 20 rounds, taken by the attackers. The other victim, identified as Hassan Harrow Odono, also lost his life in the violence. Several other persons were injured as well.

Despite government orders to close the site due to safety concerns, illegal miners have continued to invade the area, driven by the pursuit of gold.

In a previous visit to the area, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki expressed his dismay over the ongoing violence,

Police reported that several individuals, including officers and members of the invading group, sustained injuries during the conflict.

The Hilo Gold mine, located near the Kenya-Ethiopia border in Dabel, has long been a hotspot for gold mining, drawing many young people seeking opportunities. However, the government mandated its closure on March 14, 2024, citing serious safety and security issues.

The situation in Hilo has become increasingly precarious, with reports of armed criminal activity and a surge in violence among illegal miners.
