Preliminary investigations have established that William Ovie Opia bought the hatchet from an online vendor.

This comes weeks after police discovered body parts of Rita Waeni in a bag  along TRM drive, off Thika Road in Nairobi on Sunday, January 14.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene on January 14 to launch investigations into the murder.

On January 17, the family of Rita Waeni released a statement revealing that the killers had demanded a ransom of Ksh500,000.

According to the family, the horrific ordeal started on Saturday, January 13 when Waeni left her aunt’s residence in Syokimau to meet with a friend.

However, January 14 at around 5pm, her father — Muendo Mutea — received a message, delivered from Waeni’s phone number, demanding a ransom of KSh500,000 within 24 hours for her release.

After receiving this message, the family says it reported the matter to the police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and investigations began.
