Two police officers accused of bribery and robbery with violence were on Tuesday, February 27 morning arraigned before the Isiolo Anti-Corruption Court.

The two officers based at Merti Sub-County within Isiolo are accused of demanding a bribe of KSh50,000 from a suspect they had arrested and detained.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) says the suspect had been arrested for allegedly being a member of the outlawed terror group Al-Shabaab.

Officers David Irungu and Hassan Liban Hassan, EACC says, demanded this bribe as a condition for releasing the said suspect.

“The police officers, while armed with a rifle, frisked the complainant and robbed him of an additional KSh57,000,” EACC says in a statement to newsrooms.

The officers pleaded not guilty to the bribery and robbery with violence charges and were released on cash bail of KSh300,000 or surety bond of KSh500,000.

Hearing of the case will be held on 27th May 2023.
