Two university students arrested for defrauding the public while posing as EACC directors

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Monday, January 27 arrested two suspected fraudsters in Bungoma County.

Tobias Singila Wekesa, 23, and Sharon Nanjala Anyango, 26, were arrested after they were busted impersonating EACC directors.

It is reported that Singila and Nanjala have been conning public officials and members of the public in Western Region while pretending to be EACC Directors with the purported ability to ‘forgive’ corruption suspects, and stop any investigations in exchange for huge sums of money.

EACC believes the two are university students. They were apprehended at an NG-CDF office they had ‘raided’ in Bungoma County, claiming to be on official duty investigating NG-CDF projects.

They had demanded a bribe of KSh150,000, threatening to sanction the officials if they didn’t comply.

Singila has been deceitfully presenting himself as the Director of a fictitious “EACC Kakamega County”. The anti-graft agency notes that such office does not exist as the Commission’s regional office for the Western Region is based in Bungoma. The suspect informed the EACC officials that he is a third-year student at Kibabii University.

Nanjala, on the other hand, claims the title of “Director at EACC Nairobi.” She claims to have graduated from Kibabii University in 2024.

The suspects are currently in custody at Bungoma Central Police Station pending further processing on Tuesday, January 28.

The Commission is calling upon any person who may have been defrauded by the arrested suspects to contact EACC or visit its offices at Integrity Centre, Nairobi, or the nearest regional office.

Noting the numerous incidents where individuals have lost substantial sums of money to fraudsters impersonating EACC officials, the Commission calls upon members of the public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to such schemes.

Any suspected imposter should be promptly reported to the EACC through Toll-Free No. 1551 or email address [email protected] for action.
